While I was at the vet's office on Friday afternoon, a couple walked in with their dog. She was tied to a rope and had a noticeably large lump on her chest. She was slightly gray in the muzzle, thin and had the cutest little underbite. It was hard not to overhear their story as they explained that they wanted her "put to sleep", because they had plans to exchange her for a younger and healthier dog. You see, the lump on
Mia's chest had been growing for months and with no medical attention, it had now ruptured and become severely infected. But despite all of this, there she stood, tail wagging as the papers were signed and the bill was paid. To no surprise, they even declined to be present during the process. So, as they headed out the door, her Mom kissed her on the head and off they went without even glancing back. As
Mia watched them drive away, I could feel her heart breaking.
There she sat, just a week before Christmas, left to die alone, betrayed by the only family that she has ever known.
Mia sat in the corner staring out the window with her tail now tucked, and her eyes so sad. I knew I could not sit by and let her be killed without at least trying to get her the medical attention that she was deprived of for so long. So a call to the owners later that day with an offer to provide the care she needs....
